Frequently Asked Questions

What is SSL?

SSL is an acronym for Secure Sockets Layer — a method for establishing a secure, encrypted link between two different systems such as a web browser and a web server.

What do SSL certificates provide?

SSL certificates provide two roles: data encryption between browser and web server (critical for financial transactions and sensitive data), and identity verification through domain and organization validation. Only verified domain owners can purchase certificates.

How does SSL work?

The browser requests the digital certificate from the web server. The certificate contains the hostname, expiration date, public key, and Certificate Authority signature. The browser validates these, generates its own public key, and sends it back encrypted. Both sides can then communicate securely.

What is a wildcard certificate?

A wildcard SSL Certificate enables SSL encryption on multiple subdomains using a single certificate, as long as domains share the same second-level domain name. For example, *.example.com covers login.example.com, payment.example.com, etc.

What are site seals?

Static or dynamic images placed on SSL-secured websites that show visitors they can trust the site, that it's validated, and they can transact safely. Each SSL brand offers different site seals.

How does an SSL certificate create trust?

People recognize that sites with digital certificates are more secure. Certificates give confidence that data is protected. Certificate Authorities also offer Trust Seals linking to external validation.

What are dynamic vs static site seals?

Dynamic seals show current time/date and link to Certificate Authority validation. Static seals are just graphic images indicating where the certificate was obtained — no click-through validation.

What is a root certificate authority?

The highest level of digital certificate in the trust chain. Browsers have a limited set of Root Certificates from recognized authorities. All certificates link back to their Root Certificate so browsers know they're valid.

What is a public/private key pair?

Unique codes used to encrypt data. A computer sends its Public Key to another; the second computer uses it to encrypt information sent back. Only the first computer's Private Key can decrypt it.
